In a forward-looking move to bolster infrastructure safety within the oil and gas sector, Take Note IT has launched a cutting-edge project harnessing fibre optic technology to monitor pipeline conditions in real-time. This initiative is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to securing critical infrastructure through innovation and advanced monitoring solutions.
The project utilises fibre optic cables integrated with Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology to enable continuous, real-time surveillance of pipeline integrity. Deployed across a one-kilometre stretch of pipeline, from the Rosebank Mall Gas Metering Chamber, along Bath Avenue, and down Bolton Road, this implementation focuses on detecting and analysing a variety of potential threats and irregularities.
Core Monitoring Capabilities Include:
- Leak Detection: Identifying acoustic patterns associated with typical orifice noises, enabling early detection of potential leaks.
- Third-Party Intrusion: Detecting vibrations related to manual or mechanical digging that could indicate unauthorised access.
- Operational Anomalies: Recognising irregular patterns not typically aligned with standard operations, providing early warning for unusual activity.
The fibre optic cable is strategically positioned along the pipeline corridor, with the DAS system converting the cable into a highly sensitive sensor. The technology works by capturing backscattered light signals that are then interpreted by an interrogator unit. These signals are analysed using Artificial Intelligence (AI) models trained to recognise specific acoustic signatures, allowing for proactive responses to emerging risks.
Each monitored segment can be uniquely configured with tailored alert thresholds and event triggers, further enhancing the precision of threat detection and mitigation.
